In my day of wanting
Out-wandering the gypsies
Out-dreaming the fiction novelists.
If you told me that you’d have me
I’d marry you in morning before my breakfast.
And if our love proved illegal
I’d gladly go skipping in the rain to the gallows
Allow my neck freely to be hanged.
Because my life so far from sorrows.
So I ask curtly “Will you have me?”
I’ll give you kisses in your hands, on lips, and under skin
Let you strut around with your little secret
Of how your day begins.
Harboring buttons in our pockets
That fall off each others’ sweaters.
Finding the customary ramble of lovers
Sealed in soft hand-written letters
Scoffing at the scorners
That are just a tad off-beat.
We’ll out-dance along with beggars
Hold hands in darkened streets.
Out-live the folks on the avenue
Out-shout the next car when we sing.
Excite me in the morning!
An honest heart is what I bring.
Draw the curtains open freely
Let the weather test our splendor
Where in love we all belong.
In a time that ticks forever.
