Dear Sir or Madam…. you won’t be driving alone today

Prone to wander
they are getting up this morning
…..everywhere…..
one in Livingston, one in Gatlinburg,
wanting to wake up with kisses
This scenery has great trees
but just not their cup of tea.
They cannot be consoled with this taste
only comforted by the miles
only thrilled by the adventure.
The orphan’s home can be found alone
You told me with a wink.
Bags, boxes, books, instruments
thrown in the back for the ride.
The ride is an alarm clock
that doesn’t tell time.
Find their own… far from the monotony.
& the pressure, consistent pressure
that this is what you were made for.
Every window is rolled down,
summer, night, snowfall, whatever.
Each exhale of the world is felt across the face
and through the hair.
On a road that leads to anywhere.
People eating packets of honey on crackers
Such a risky sweet sweeps across the tongue.
Sleeping in cars at rest stops
Drifting to dreams with the truckers.
Are you being summoned too?
Or is the land only shouting in our ears.
Come see me, it’s been years.
Bring your music and shoot your fears.
Good bye this is a lovely way.
A bullet and a smile’s all I gave.
